Here are three things everyone should know about Windows 10:

WINDOWS 10 WILL BE AVAILABLE AS A FREE UPGRADE

This was not a surprise for Windows 8 users, who had expected this for a long time. But it was a true surprise that Windows 7 Operating Systems will also be eligible for a free upgrade. Can’t argue with free.

THE APPLICATION WILL INTELLIGENTLY SWITCH BETWEEN TOUCH AND TRADITIONAL MODE

Microsoft calls this feature “Continuum”. It allows users to switch back and forth between the tablet and traditional experience, and automatically optimizes. This gives users a seamless experience regardless how they use it. This should provide the huge population of users who don’t have a touch screen to have a more familiar experience, while encouraging anyone who wants to use touch.

IT IS PART OF AN AMBITIOUS UNIVERSAL EXPERIENCE, ACROSS ALL DEVICES

Unlike Apple, who has a Mac OS and iOS for mobile, Microsoft has endeavored on an ambitious plan to create a universal experience on a tablet, phone or desktop. This should make the experience similar, easy to navigate and friendly no matter how you access it.

I personally use a Windows phone, tablet (Surface Pro 3) and occasionally a desktop and have found the experience across Windows devices to be elegant. I am excited to see if they can pull off a unified platform.

THE BACKSTORY

Despite being a stable and thoughtful operating system, Windows 8 was largely derided by the media and unaccepted by the business community. This was due to several reasons, but the dominant reasons were the removal of the familiar Start button, and the user experience was designed around “Touch”, which isn’t relevant for many users. Aside from these problems, the operating system is fast, easy to load and elegant from an IT management and utilization standpoint. Windows 8.1 re-introduced the Start button but it was too late to stop the nosedive, and the Operating System never reached critical mass.

Immediately following the commercial failure of Windows 8, Microsoft got busy creating the next generation. Skipping Windows 9 for 10, this operating system aims to give computer users worldwide a better experience on a mobile device, tablet, laptop or traditional monitor.

Upgrading and implementing the new operating system should be managed by a professional and carefully considered.
